Description
Domaine de l’Arlot Vosne-Romanée ‘Les Suchots’ 1er Cru
The heart of this Burgundian superstar property was formed in the 18th century, with the rise of the wall demarcating the original limits of the estate, as well as the surrounding vineyard, the “Clos de l’Arlot.” Today, under the careful eye of Technical Director Géraldine Godot, the house remains small but continues rising in esteem, biodynamically farming 14 hectares of grapes, including two other monopole (solely owned) vineyards: “Clos des Forêts St-Georges,” and “Clos du Chapeau.” Long known for their use of 100% whole cluster fermentation, and 100% new oak, Geraldine has slowly dialed that back over the years and now makes decisions on stem inclusion and oak treatment wine by wine, vintage by vintage, but there will usually be some stems and at least a little new oak.
“Les Suchots” is one of the very best premier cru vineyards in the hallowed village of Vosne-Romanée. It borders two Grand Cru, Richebourg and Romanée-Saint-Vivant, and has much of the same presence of power that is tamed by an elegant texture and a fragrant, spice laden perfume. L’Arlot has a small but prime parcel of 60 year old vines that have been farmed biodynamically since 2003. A classically built vintage, comparable to 2014 or 2001, this Suchots will age gracefully for 20 years or more, but if you decide to try one in the next 2-3 years be sure to give it a good long decant in order to experience the full spectrum of red and black fruits, roses and violets, and many layers of earth, minerals, and exotic spices.
