Domaine Dujac, Clos St. Denis Grand Cru
Founded by the now legendary Jacques Seyss, this iconic domaine is now run by his sons Alec and Jeremy, and Jeremy’s wife, Diana Snowden who has a degree in oenology from UC Davis and is from a prominent winemaking family in Napa. Together, and under the still watchful eye of Jacques, the team continues every vintage to make wines that clearly place this property in the very top tier of Red Burgundy. Though the second generation has made some very small adjustments, the style and vision of Jacques continues without interruption. That includes a healthy percentage of whole cluster fermentation and aging in barriques (although they do have a few concrete eggs for the Chardonnays). The Domaine is in Morey-Saint-Denis, and that remains the heart of their holdings, but it has expanded into some of the best terroirs of neighboring Chambolle-Musigny and Gevrey-Chambertin. These are Burgundies of the utmost pedigree and prestige, and they’re very limited.
Clos-Saint-Denis is one of the iconic “Clos” Grand Crus of Morey, sandwiched between Clos-de-la-Roche and Clos de Lambrays. The Dujac team farms two small but excellent parcels in the sub crus of Calouère and Les Chaffots. This ancient vineyard is known for producing wines with lavish fruit and luxurious texture, but with plenty of power and structure to age for many years. If you open once young be sure to give it a good decant prior to serving, but the longer this wine can age in bottle the better. As it matures the silky red and black fruits will become more intertwined with the layers of exotic spices, minerals, dried flowers, mushrooms, and forest floor.
