Fabio Gea, Langhe Nebbiolo “Nòtu Preparava…”
Despite the label’s “Langhe” designation, this organically farmed Nebbiolo comes from entirely within Barbaresco. The grapes were de-stemmed and macerated for three to four weeks. Fermentation and aging occurred in porcelain for 2.5 years before bottling without fining and filtering. It was then allowed to rest for two additional years before leaving the cellar. A mere 56 cases were produced in total. The wine’s full fantasy name translates to “Grandpa prepared decoctions of parietaria with the ox” in Piedmontese dialect.” This is a massive and elegant wine, brooding with muscular berry fruit and a hearty iron- and leather-tinged core. It’ll keep aging very well but it’s one that can be thoroughly enjoyed now. For what it’s worth, this was my favorite cuvée of the four.
