Domaine Dujac, Morey-St.-Denis Village AOC
Founded by the now legendary Jacques Seyss, this iconic domaine is now run by his sons Alec and Jeremy, and Jeremy’s wife, Diana Snowden who has a degree in oenology from UC Davis and is from a prominent winemaking family in Napa. Together, and under the still watchful eye of Jacques, the team continues every vintage to make wines that clearly place this property in the very top tier of Red Burgundy. Though the second generation has made some very small adjustments, the style and vision of Jacques continues without interruption. That includes a healthy percentage of whole cluster fermentation and aging in barriques (although they do have a few concrete eggs for the Chardonnays). The Domaine is in Morey-Saint-Denis, and that remains the heart of their holdings, but it has expanded into some of the best terroirs of neighboring Chambolle-Musigny and Gevrey-Chambertin. These are Burgundies of the utmost pedigree and prestige, and they’re very limited.
Morey-Saint-Denis is mostly surrounded by its famous neighbors, Chambolle-Musigny and Gevrey-Chambertin, and such the village’s wines are often defined by their proximity to one side or the other. In the case of Dujac, most of their parcels are closer to Gevrey and so their AOC Morey is a deep, dark, and spice driven Pinot Noir. Both red and black cherries intermingle with other wild, forest fruits, and a range of spices, from cinnamon and clove to fennel seed, can be found in the complex aromatics. Like all of the Dujac reds there is a deep core of savory, and saline, minerals that play perfectly with the rich, sensual fruit and texture. If you have not yet experienced the power of Dujac, their Morey is a perfect place to start.
