Domaine Fabrice Vigot, Vosne-Romanée “Les Chalandins”
Domaine Vigot is run by Fabrice and Christine Vigot, who founded the estate in 1990 by combining the landholdings of their respective families. Most notably, Fabrice’s father worked with the famed Dr. Georges Mugneret in the 1960s, looking after some of their most prized vineyards in a sharecropping agreement that lasted through 2016. Meaning, the Vigot family played a significant role in the creation of Burgundy’s most legendary, expensive, and sought-after wines—those of Domaine Mugneret-Gibourg.
Bring a golf ball and driver to Vigot’s parcel in “Les Chalandins,” aim due north, and a solid swing will land you in Grand Cru Clos de Vougeot. Aim southwest and a prime Tiger might be able to reach the fringe of Grand Cru Romanée-St-Vivant. The Vigots farm their 65-80-year-old vines with organic principles in the vineyard with a recent focus on biodynamics. In 2019, all of their grapes were hand-harvested and partially de-stemmed, leaving around half of the clusters intact during the native-yeast fermentation. The resulting wine spent 18 months in Burgundian barrels, 50% new. Bottling occurred without fining or filtering.
Vigot’s 2019 “Chalandins” is loaded with intoxicating perfumes: purple and red flowers, smoked cherry, pomegranate, ripe raspberry, goji berry, white tea, black peppercorn, and a savory herb-spice blend. It reveals polished structure, delicate soil character, and luxurious heft on a medium-bodied palate that promises 10-15 years of flattering evolution. It’s hard to imagine any other $100 bottle of Vosne topping this level of quality and complexity.
