Description
Domaine Georges Vernay, Condrieu “Coteau de Vernon”
On top of Vernay’s standard-bearer “Les Terrasses de L’Empire” bottling, you also have the extremely rare chance to indulge in the family’s most coveted and limited cuvée: “Coteau de Vernon.” This is sourced from some of the oldest Viognier vines in the region, 50% planted in 1936 by Georges’ father Francis and 50% in the mid-1960s by Georges himself.
The vines plunge their roots deep into almost pure-granite soils, on an impossibly steep slope called Vernon, and yields rarely reach more than 25 hectoliters per hectare which is lower than Grand Cru Burgundy. It’s pressed whole-cluster and fermented/aged in 25% new barriques and larger foudres. This 2019 is an astoundingly and intoxicatingly rich, perfumed, and textured wine—with remarkable freshness—and it’ll age for 10+ years if you’re patient enough. “Coteau de Vernon” is simply one of the rarest, most profound bottles of Condrieu you’ll encounter. We have two-dozen bottles to share.
