Sylvain Morey gained a deep knowledge working alongside his legendary father, Jean-Marc Morey, so when he inherited some of the family’s holdings in 2014, he instantly became one of Burgundy’s rising stars. This is evident up and down his entire lineup of stylishly powerful wines, and today’s Santenay Premier Cru “Grand Clos Rousseau” is the darling of the Morey portfolio: This tiny .40-hectare holding was planted by Sylvain’s grandfather, Albert, back in 1974 and it’s a true overachiever. After tasting several vintages of “Grand Clos Rousseau” over the years, we understand why the Moreys love it so much. Often one of the last plots to ripen, this parcel typically produces Pinot Noir with more structure and concentration—meaning, it’s a savvy collectible that will cellar nicely for many years to come. In the glass, dark cherry fruit laced with Asian spices and licorice rolls out, followed by succulent forest berries, crushed earth, plum, tea, and cedar spice. It’s a young 1er Cru Burgundy, yes, but one that’s already powerful, sleek, and impeccably balanced. Only 30-odd cases make it stateside each year!
