Fabio Gea, Barbaresco “Nòtu Seguiva…”
Fabio Gea’s Barbaresco comes from organically farmed Nebbiolo vines near the bricco in his home village. The grapes were de-stemmed and macerated on their skins for no less than one month. After fermentation was completed in concrete vessels, the wine matured in neutral barrels for three years before further aging in homemade porcelain jars. It was finally bottled unfined and unfiltered in July of 2021 and allowed to rest for an additional year. Just over 150 cases were produced. The wine’s full fantasy name translates to “Grandfather Followed the Drop of Water” in Piedmontese dialect. Although I was fortunate enough to savor a bottle over three days (and it showed best on day three), I must implore you to lay this down for another 2-3 years before opening. It’s dark and burly and full of chewy tannin that gives way to a superbly energetic core of black cherry, licorice, cassis, and pulverized black rock. Decant generously if consuming within the next few years.
